Teen sex health crisis 'fuelled by celebrity culture'
T
Teenagers in the UK are facing a sexual health crisis fuelled by the unhealthy influence of celebrity culture which is introducing young people to a life of alcohol, drugs and sex, according to a new report.
The Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV has found that the number teenagers contracting sexually transmitted diseases has risen and so too has the teenage pregnancy rate, both of which are now among the highest in Europe.
Government campaigns are failing says the report and there are too many conflicting messages coming from celebrities and advertising.
Anne Weyman from the group appeared on BBC News 24 this morning and said:
"We need to look at it from young people's point of view.
"They see around them this culture of celebrities, in the newspapers, around sex and drugs, alcohol, all being brought together and they're not being given alongside that the information and the education they need to handle issues like drugs and alcohol and sex as they're growing up."
A TV watershed on condom advertising may also be creating problems while a lack of compulsory sex education in schools is severely hampering education about the risks of promiscuity, according to the report.
